Today is International Women's Day

Today is International Women's Day!

Today is the day to recognise the contribution of women and the work that they do - in both employed roles and in their home lives.  The campaign theme for 2017 is BE BOLD FOR CHANGE!

Although International Women's Day has existed in varying forms since 1908, it is has been recognised by the UN since 1975.  This year, the UN has chosen to focus on Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50:50 by 2030.  This theme seeks to highlight both the emerging opportunities and the issues facing women globally.

Women's marches and strikes are being held in many different countries, with strikes seeking to highlight the vital role that women play in keeping society running.  As such, many will refuse to undertake any work today - whether that been in their place of employment, or in the home.  Others who choose not to strike are being encouraged to wear red (traditionally a colour of strength) to show their solidarity with women. Today may be a day to recognise the work that women do - but I think today and everyday should be about women recognising their own worth, and celebrating who they are as individuals, as well as their contribution to society.
